Free Motion Friday - Clam and Pearl Strings

It's been a busy month for me!  With school starting keeping up on anything is getting challenging.  Directions for this new design Clam and Pearl Strings are here.

Here's the photographed process I used to create this design.  It's a little different than other designs I've done as it requires two passes.  First the clamshells and then the pearls.

Start in the top left corner and make clamshells (1/2 circles) across to the opposite corner.

Stitch in the ditch down to where you want to start the next row of clams.  Keep in mind that sometimes this will mean starting with half of a clamshell ans shown below.

Continue filling the space with clamshells until the whole square or rectangle is covered.

Now it's time to add the pearls.  I started in the corner where I finished my clamshells.  Since this particular part was 1/2 clamshells I did half circles going up the entire side of the square.

Then I stitched in to the center of the next clamshell where I started making full circles.  You can see what I mean below.  Now the topmost point of that clamshell is hard to put a circle in so I simple backtracked over the top line a little and then started my circles.  I then continued this downward until I got to the bottom of the column.

Again, stitch in the ditch over to where you want to start again and make your circles going up.

Continue this method until all the circles have been stitched!

Voila!  Clam and Pearl Strings.  I like this design.  It's curvy and linear at the same time which adds visual interest.

Don't forget to show me what you've been stitching on my Machine Applique Adventures Facebook group!

Come back Monday for the start of my Folk Art Quilted Traditions Blog Hop!  Next Friday's post will be about using some of my designs I've created for this quilt along in a new project...can't wait to share with you all.  The following Friday we'll be back to new designs.

I hope you get to quilt today!
