Island Batik Ambassador's Thread Painting with Aurifil Challenge

This month the Island Batik Ambassadors were challenged to do some Thread Painting with Aurifil!  What fun!

I received the gorgeous Buttercup collection to play with.  But what to do?  I decided I wanted to make some flowers and I found some gorgeous blue and yellow pansies.  For the thread painting I wanted to make them look fuzzy as that's how pansies feel.

These are the beautiful Aurifil threads that were provided to me.  I love Aufiril.

I then went into my thread stash and found more colors to add even more texture...can you tell I love Aurifil?

For my batting I chose Hobbs Tuscany Supreme 100% Unbleached cotton.  It's a thicker batt and I wanted to see how the texture played with it.

I then had a lot of fun playing with adding my texture.

On the basket I outlined all the blue dragonflies in yellow thread.

A little bit of pansies in the snow as we got a freak October snowstorm.  It makes for a pretty picture!  I had fun quilting feathers and pebbles in the background.

I hope you get to quilt today!

From the Heart Blog Hop

I'm excited to share my project today!  I love making projects for Carol of Just Let Me Quilt's Blog Hops.

I wanted to make mug rugs that felt like a hug.  I decided on a heart.  They turned out a little Valentine's feeling, but it's the idea that counts. (Hint....go with a different color than pink!) Oh well, I'm sure my recipients will still like them.

I started with a simple heart in a gorgeous Island Batik fabric.

Then I had a lot of fun quilting the heart and background area.

I love it when they're all squared up:

Then I did fusible binding.  I applied fusible to a large square of fabric.  I use steam a seam 2 lite so it sticks and stays.  It's much easier than other products for fusible binding.

I align it on the front side.

Then I cut it to length and flip it over to the back.  Then I iron it in place.

Be sure to make the front pieces straight and about the same width.  That's why I do this on top of my cutting matt.

Align the strips on the other two sides and trim the sides at and angle like the orange pencil.

Then fold these bits around the edge.  Then fold the binding to the back.

Ta da!

Also be sure to go back and stitch down your fused binding.  I use various stitches.  For this one I used a straight stitch.

On this one I did a wavy line to stitch down the binding.

These were really fun and quick to make.  I thought about making ones with pencils appliqued in the middle for my teacher friends.  Or you could dog bones for a dog lover, etc.  The possibilities are endless.

I hope you get to quilt today!

Morning Star Fun!

I started with some beautiful Island Batik background fabric, a 10 inch square stack of the Lemon Grass collection, and the Morning Star Accuquilt die.  AND OH DID I HAVE FUN!

I designed a quilt using the block.  Here is the center block of it.

And here are my leftover pieces made up into a table runner.  I know, it's done first.  I wanted to practice putting together a few blocks before I really got going.

The good news?  IT WAS SO EASY.  And they went together beautifully.  I decided to press all the sames open and it worked like a charm.  I'm a pinner, so I pinned a ton, but I am so happy with the results.  This is such a beautiful collection form Island Batik!

Island Batik Bonus Quilt

I started with a fat quarter pack of Island Batik's Catching Dreams collection.  I made my monthly project (see below), but I still had a lot of fabric left.  I cut it up into 2" squares and played with them.  Below is the results!  It looks like one huge snowflake.  It was fun to play with color placement with darks on the inside and lights on the outside plus my favorite gray Island Batik solid.

Here is the monthly quilt I made with the rest of the collection.  It's one of my favorites!

For the quilting I just did large overall feathers all over the snowflake.  It was fun to play with different kinds of feathers.

I hope you get to quilt today!

Comparing Quilting Designs

I decided I wanted to play with comparing different quilting patterns in the same block.

I started with some leftover ten inch squares of beautiful Island Batik fabric and my favorite Hobbs 80/20 batting.

Each area is quilted different.  In this one the white area has feathers, the yellow have matchstick quilting, and the blue have some fun flower like shapes.

This one has an x motif in the white, bubbles in the yellow, and stars in the light blue.

This one has swirls in the white and continuous curve in the blue and yellow.

Here are a few closeups:

Results?  I love them all! Don't make me choose!
