Modern Mini Applique Block 33

Today's block is flower like.  I need some joy today.  It's been a rough week for MANY reasons.  This particular color gradation from light green to blue makes me smile and I hope it makes you smile too.

Modern Mini Applique Block 32

A pinwheel?  A fan?  I'm not sure, but it's fun!  I really like the extra half circles cut out because I think it adds interest.

Modern Mini Applique Block 31

This is one of my favorite blocks so far.  I love the tri-radial symmetry of it.  And the colors are such fun.  It was also fun to try to put a strip e in a small dot!

Modern Mini Applique Block 30

This block is definitely a tee pee.  With a blue moon behind it.  And some random purple moons too because, why not? LOL.  Happy Memorial Day!

Modern Mini Applique Block 29

Red and Blue!  Seems appropriate for Memorial Day weekend even if it's supposed to rain like crazy here.  Oh well.  Maybe this is even fireworks?  I dunno.  But I like the shapes and colors together.

It's Cool to be Square Blog Hop

Today it's my turn for the It's Cool to be Square Blog Hop from Just Let Me Quilt!  I wanted to make something with small squares and wasn't in the mood to piece so I decided to applique them.

I put some fusible on the back of this beautiful green Island Batik print.  I then cut out 1 inch and half inch squares.

Once I had them all arranged how I wanted them I fused them in place.  To stitch them down, I layered the quilt and did a continuous curve quilting to stitch them all in place.

I then had fun quilting a TON of feathers.  You can never have too many feathers!

It was interesting trying to quilt this tiny center with feathers.

Complete!  Sew pretty.

Be sure to check out all the other quilters on the hop!

Also...I'm doing an online mystery that starts Memorial Day (though if you send me an email I'll show you what it looks like early). Here are all the details:

The Mystery Quilt is READY! Clink on one of the links below to pay your $10 fee. If it's an issue, please send me a private message and I can help get it all set for you.
IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE QUILT FIRST...and not be surprised...SEND ME an email to websterquilt at gmail dot com and I'll show you...but no sharing
PayPal

Here's the plan:

  1. A $10 fee gets you into a private Facebook Group where we can share instructions and pictures as we work on the project. As soon as I have your payment I will send you an invite to the group.
  2. YARDAGE and CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS are ready and in the Facebook Group which is called Suzy Webster Quilts Mystery Quilt
  3. It's a traditional looking quilt, but would totally look modern if using modern fabrics
  4. No large fabric border. There will be a pieced border (though you could add one later if you wanted)
  5. One new clue a week for about 6 weeks until tops are complete and we can add a week or two to talk about how to quilt it if you'd like. The first week or two will be for cutting and then we'll get started
  6. Zoom meetings once a week to ask questions/sew along/etc to be decided by the group
  7. Two size options - throw (66 x 66) and bed (92 x 92)
  8. All pieces are squares and rectangles.
  9. Can be totally scrappy or not. Up to you. You can scrap the background too if desired as long as the fabrics read the same.

Modern Mini Applique Block 28

For this block I had fun doing symmetry on an angle.  I also had a good time changing up the length of my blanket stitch for different pieces.  Maybe it's planets?  Or moons?

Modern Mini Applique Block 27

I really like how the arches almost connect in this block.  I also had fun fussy cutting the circles so that a little bit of light green showed, but they were mostly dark green.

Modern Mini Applique Block 26

I had fun picking the rainbow of colors for this one.  I think it's test tubes!  It's simple, but fun with the offset placement.  If you look carefully you can also see I used different width stitching as a fun detail too.

Modern Mini Applique Block 25

This one reminds me of a stapler.  One of those that stand up on your desk instead of sit flat.  I have no idea why.  I really like it!

Modern Mini Applique Block 24

For this block I decided to try doing a block on a diagonal that wasn't down the center of the block (though that is hard to tell from this picture).  I also like that the triangles stick up a little outside the half circles.  I want to use that motif again sometime.

Also, notice that I'm using different length blanket stitches.  The orange circle has much longer stitches than the yellow or purple pieces.

Modern Mini Applique Block 23

When I started this block I started with the arch and then was trying to decide what would go inside it.  I'm not sure how I ended up with the rectangle, but I like it. It sort of reminds me of a kayak?

Come join me for an Online Mystery Quilt!

Hello all!  Some friends of mine were looking for a project to work on altogether, so being a designer I jumped right in.  I designed a quilt that is ALL squares and rectangles and looks great scrappy or not scrappy.

Modern Mini Applique Block 22

Someone asked how large these blocks are.  Good question!  They are going to finish at 6" because I have a 6 1/2" square ruler and that makes it easy to trim.  That is honestly the main reason.  The plan is to make 100 and make them into a large throw/wall quilt.

Today's block reminds me of hour glasses.  I like that two go up and one goes down.  This lime and purple print is also one of my favorites.

Modern Mini Applique Block 21

My son insists that these are insects, maybe ladybugs sort of.  The other son thinks they're eggs coming out of a shell.  Me?  I like the shape.  And the pattern in the orange batik.  It's fun!

Modern Mini Applique Block 20

This block is so modern and different!  I really like the way it turned out and I have no idea how the design originally came to me, but it's just fun and funky.

Modern Mini Applique Block 19

When I designed this one I thought it was modern.  My mom says it's more traditional. I say I like it and it's done so it goes in the quilt!  :)

If you look closely at the very center circle you can see that the stitches are much longer.  I did this on purpose to add variation and contrast.

Modern Mini Applique Block 18

This block will always remind me of three tee pees in a row.  Roland says it looks like three winter hats with green pompoms on the top.  Lol.  Different perspectives.  Either way I love the color combination.

Modern Mini Applique Block 17

As I was working on this block I made a few changes.  Originally all the dark purple dots were supposed to be on the top, but I decided middle set needed the dark on the bottom.  I love the color combination of bright red and mint green.

Check out how large of stitching I used on the mint green!  It was fun to make it really stand out.

Island Batik Ambassador's Ultimate Home Decor Blog Hop!

Welcome to the Island Batik Ambassador's Ultimate Home Decor Blog Hop!  I'm excited to share my beautiful pillow with you today.

Image may contain: text
For this blog hop I was given the GORGEOUS Cascadia collection designed by Claudia Pfeil for Island Batik.  It's so rich and pretty.

You can win these fabrics from Island Batik!

Speaking of Claudia, I have been doing her quilt along for the last two months.  I decided that this would be a perfect technique for using her fabric!  Duh?!

So here are the pieces before assembly.

And after assembly.   It's amazing what a difference sewing all the seams makes.

My pillow is 24 inches square.  I have had this pillow since I was in college and it was desperately in need of a new cover.  This is so cheerful it just makes me smile.  I made it removable so it is washable too.

I'm not sure which is my favorite fabric in the collection, but I used this one on the back and it certainly is one of my top favorites.  I sewed my project with Schmetz Microtex Chrome needles and my favorite Aurifil Thread of course.  They work so well together.

I'm going to go curl up with a good book and my new pillow.  Enjoy your day!

I hope you get to quilt today!
