Island Batik Ambassador's Paper Pieced Celebrations Blog Hop
This month the Island Batik Ambassadors are showing off brand new collections that will be out shortly! We were challenged to create paper pieced projects. These could be foundation paper piecing or English paper piecing.
I received Dots and Doodles by Carol Moellers Designs. The fabrics are very modern and large scale. I knew I wanted to make something with large pieces to really show off the fabrics.
Designs with paper pieced feathers have been popular for awhile so I decided to try my hand at one. However, I wanted them to be HUGE! What to do? I could draw my feather and then have the image blown up, but large scale copies are expensive. Then, one day, as I was sitting in my classroom it occurred to me that the large roll paper we use for bulletin boards was 3 feet wide. Perfect. I grabbed a piece and drew my feathers full scale. We had no white, but yellow paper worked great. Here you can see the pieces in progress. My Schmetz Microtex Needles and Aurifil thread had no trouble going through the paper. It also ripped really easily because it was so thin. My Oliso iron worked wonderfully to get these pieces nice and flat before adding the next one. It was a bit challenging with 36" long sections to piece!
And here are the finished feathers! So fun to see so much of the print. The quilting was done by my mom with my favorite Hobbs 80/20 Cotton/Poly batting. I love how it looks like the feathers are floating on the wind.
My bulb garden is showing off right now. What a perfect background!
Island Batik is giving away two fat quarter bundles this week. You can enter below.
Here are a few of the shops that will be carrying this collection: Blue Magic Quiltworks in Arizona, Laura's Sewing and Quilt Shop in Florida, Laural's Fabrics and More in Minnesota, Queen Bee Quilts in Wisconsin, Wise Monkey Quilting in Iowa, and Patty's Heart Quilt Shop in Texas.
Be sure to check out all the other Ambassador's posts of new collections! They are stunning.
Instead of large as you did, I went small & used rolls of adding machine paper. Thanks.
