Island Batik Ambassador's One Die Wonder with Accuquilt Project

Welcome to my March Island Batik Ambassador Project!  Our challenge this month is in conjunction with Accuquilt.  We were each sent a Block on Board Die from Accuquilt to create with.

I received the Chimney Sweep Die.  It will always remind me of the classic album quilts where people signed their names in the X in the center.  I made one of these quilts when I was in high school for graduation.  All my friends and teachers signed it.  It still hangs on the wall in my entry way of my home.

So, for this quilt I wanted to try to do something a little different with the block.  I wanted to see if I could make a modern quilt with it.  Yes, I'm not kidding!  I wanted to go outside the box.

Here's my fabric pull on my cutter all ready to go!

When I first opened the die and looked at it I realized that not only did the triangles have the dog ears cut off, but the squares and rectangles did too.  At first I couldn't figure out why that was...but then it came to me.

This purple square is lined up with a green triangle.  Do you see how the square and triangle have the same dog ears cut so they line up perfectly?!  Brilliant!  It made sewing this block a snap.

Here you can see adding the wee corner triangle.  Again, lined up perfectly.

Now let's look at some quilting!  I did straight matchsticks in the green to make the other areas pop.  In the purple and lavender I chose to do continuous curve quilting.

Here's the back.  It of course uses my favorite Aurifil threads and Hobbs 80/20 Cotton/poly batting.  I also used Schmetz microtex Chrome needles to sew with.  They slide through the fabric like butter.

Big swirls fill the cream areas and I had fun with the largest purple square adding a flourish to my continuous curve.

All done!  Very modern and using the Chimney Sweep block.  Mission accomplished!

I hope you get to quilt today!  And I hope you are staying safe and healthy.

Claudia Pfeil's Corona Mystery

The truly amazing and talented Claudia Pfeil has started a Facebook Group and is doing a mystery quilt for this challenge period in time.

I am a Claudia Pfan for sure and I joined.  Check out what I've done so far!  I'm bringing spring into my house in Minnesota where it snowed a little this morning.  It's certainly given me something to do and enjoy.

I might've gotten TOTALLY carried away.   But it's been a blast!

I hope you get to quilt today!

Quilt Qwazy Queens Making Us Laugh Blog Hop

It's been an emotional last few weeks for me for personal reasons and with COVID-19 it has only gotten crazier!  What makes me laugh?  As of Sunday (three days ago) I still had no idea.  I asked my fifth grade students (who I miss already!) and my own kids.  None of their ideas jelled.

I finally decided on a silly shoe because they always make me smile.  Did you know any shot from Star Wars with Admiral Tarkin where his feet don't show he was in bunny slippers?  Cracks me up.  And my sister has Monty Python Killer Rabbit Slippers.

So I went to good old Google and searched silly shoes.  I finally came upon someone with what looked like a high heeled roller skate.  I couldn't stop laughing.  That was it.  So here is my quilt!  Made with all Island Batik fabrics of course!

Could my son's Koala wear it?!

I love this amazing purple and black print!

And if that didn't make you laugh...

My son and I have been doing silly drawings.  He has stomach flu (not corona) and I've been trying to entertain him.  I draw the first half of the picture and then he has to finish it.

So here's a lightsaber handle.  It got turned into a toothpick dispenser.

And a hot dog...that got made into soy sauce.  Check out the sodium nutrition facts he included.  The kid has the best sense of humor.

I hope I made you laugh today.

I hope you get to quilt today.
