My Oldest UFO

I'm sure I made these blocks when I was in middle school or high school.  It was a long time ago and I remember being SO excited that I had a bunch of fabrics in different colors with the same print.  They never got beyond this stage as they're all printed on colored fabric and they bled in later projects I did.  Thus, they are still blocks.  But I can't seem to let go of them.  So they enjoy living in my partly done stack.


I still love snails trail.  Such a fun block.  This green combination is my favorite.

My First Project -- I was 8 Years Old

I vividly remember getting to go to Minnesota Fabrics to pick out fabric for my first quilt.  At the time, my mom had never sewn triangles, but of course she didn't tell me that and let me forge ahead.  Here is the quilt.  I still have it.  Nope, it's still not done.  There were those that came soon after I did complete, but never this one.  And I can't go back and do it now, so it remains an incomplete project and a symbol of my heart as well.


 I did my best sewing triangles and adding sashing.  Look at all those calicoes!


We then hand basted the quilt along the sashing and I started hand stitching the blocks.  I can't replicate what my 8 year old self would've done, so I leave it as is.  A beginning.  It was fun to pull it out and look at it.  It's been awhile.

Virtual Cookie Exchange and Blog Hop

Here are two of my latest Christmas projects!  And a yummy Christmas cookie recipe link too.  Thanks to Carol at Just Let Me Quilt for organizing this fun Blog Hop!

 This quilt was made with the small dot cutter Accuquilt Die.  It's such fun to use and makes circles so easy to deal with.  I had a good time placing them to look like a tree and ornaments.  It of course uses my favorite Island Batik fabrics.


This second project also uses Island Batik scraps.  It's a fun and festive wreath-like table runner.


I got this recipe at Fireflies and Mudpies.  The link is here.  I meant to make some to show you and tell you about....but I haven't gotten around to it!  But aren't they cute?  The quilter in my wants to play with icing and micro M&M's.

My Favorite Tools

My current favorite tools!  I bought this at my local quilt show in June.  I adore it.  It's so easy to use and so light weight.


My other favorite tool right now is my Quilter's Select rulers.  I love the coating that they have on the back to keep them in place so they don't slip.  I recently cut silk and they were a saving grace!

My Machines!

It's Day 3 of the 31 Day Blogging Challenge and today I'm talking about my machines.

I am a Bernina girl and own four.  Okay, okay, yes I own four Berninas.  We also have my first sewing machine, a Pfaff, and two Janomes my children won in the house.  And I'm getting another one soon.  Is that too many?  Nah....I have friends who own many more (okay, granted a lot of those are vintage, but it still counts, right?).

My travel machine and the one that I use most and that sits on my kitchen table most of the time is a Bernina 570.  It is such a blast to use and I adore her.


I do all my show quilting on my Bernina 770 which sits in it's own Tracey's Table in my sewing room down stairs.  I use this almost exclusively for free motion quilting.

This ad for the new Handi Quilter Capri is hanging on my wall.  It's on order and they're supposed to start shipping this month.  Fingers crossed that I'll have it to play with over Christmas break.  I'm sew excited!  I have four quilts pinned and awaiting it's arrival.

My Sewing Space

Day Two of the 31 Day Blogging Challenge is "My Sewing Space."  I have a wonderful sewing room down stairs.  It's the same size as our master (an older house about 11 x 15 I think).  I was looking for a great space when we bought our house.  It's has full size windows even though it's in the basement and lots of great light.  I just threw bags in it when I was getting ready for Thanksgiving (hence the floor), but the table top is mostly clean!


However, my youngest son really prefers that I'm upstairs instead of downstairs, so most of the time you will find me here at my kitchen table with my smaller machine.  My husband has learned to deal with the fact that it lives there even though it drives him crazy sometimes.


I've also taken over the coat closet at the top of our split entry stairs.  It was rarely used and now I can close the door on all the stuff I keep upstairs due to my son's preference.  It's also clean and I know where everything is (at least for the moment...).

I also have a small table in our living room that I use for working.  Again, they've all gotten used to it.  I do like being upstairs where I can interact with my boys (well, most of the time...there are times mommy needs a time out).

The 31 Day Blog Writing Challenge - Introduction



Hello!  My name is Suzy Webster.  I've been quilting since I was eight years old and it is definitely a passion of mine.  I've published one book and self published two others.  When I go for a few days with no sewing I start to get cranky! 


My first book was based on the embroidery traditions of my heritage, Hungary.  It was so fun to turn the embroidery into applique patterns.

 I've done Cheryl's challenge once before a few years ago and I'm excited to get writing.  Be sure to check back daily to see what I'm up to.

 My favorite parts of quilting are Applique,

 Cutting using my GO! Big Cutter (I am a Accuquilt GO Getter!).  It's such a time saver and really helps my tendinitis stay calm.

 Free Motion Quilting (I am addicted to feathers.  You can never have enough),

 and Paper Piecing and English Paper Piecing (Hexies forever!).

 I've been an Ambassador for Island Batiks the last four years.  Batiks are my favorite fabrics to work with though I do like playing with silk and leather once in a while for fun.

 This quilt hung in an exhibit in the National Quilt Museum for three months last year.  It was so exciting!  It has all sorts of fun black fabrics like leather, taffeta, silk, and velvet as well as cotton.

I try to blog two-three days a week normally and I have a Facebook Group called Machine Applique Adventures where I post what I'm working on, links to all my blog posts, inspiration, and other fun quilting related topics.  Come join us!
