Free Motion Friday - Some Pictures and Wonderful News

Okay, I know.  It's Friday and there should be a new pattern.  I am feeling the guilt (is quilter's guilt related to mother's guilt???)

BUT...I have TWO exciting things to share instead!  (And one of them is some gorgeous free motion!)

FIRST, my current show quilt Kaboom! took third place at Road to California.  So exciting!

I used a dark navy thread for the fill work so I could see what I was doing.  I like the subtle effect it makes.

These photos are from the back of the quilt.

SECOND,  I have been accepted as an Island Batik Ambassador for 2017!  That means more luscious batiks and more quilting fun!  Stay tuned!

I hope you get to quilt today!
(I don't....pinewood derby day!)

Kaboom goes to Houston and gets Fixed too!

I was thrilled this week to learn that my quilt, Kaboom!, got into International Quilt Festival Houston this November.  I also have a new group quilt that will make it's debut there.  Both of these quilts have been in the works for 4-5 years before completion.  Granted there were times when they weren't being actively worked on, but it's amazing to see them both come to fruition.

When I hung Kaboom! on my parent's wall to take a picture of it that would be submitted to shows I realized that the large orange rays were causing the quilt to distort and not hang flat.  All the other areas were quilted to death, but I'd left these open with just stitch in the ditch around the edges.

I was curious what comments would come back from Home Machine Quilter's Showcase, it's first show.  Sure enough the judges commented that the orange spikes needed more quilting.  SIGH.  I knew they were right, but the reason I hadn't quilted them in the first place was that I couldn't figure out what to do with the print in the fabric.  I didn't want to quilt over the circles in orange and I didn't want to quilt the background in anything other than orange.  I tried a few different ideas and ripped all of them out.

Then, as luck would have it, I was having a Facebook conversation with an amazing quilter friend and was telling her about the problem.  She suggested dots.  I began to think that instead of outlining all those dots in the print I could just make big dots around the dots in the print.  I had to try it.

I am super thrilled with the results and the back looks AMAZING!

Here are a few more closeups of the quilting.

I've heard back from 2 people who are planning to make my Bricks Quilt (here for pattern) and do my free motion quilt along!  I hope you join in the fun.

Look for a new applique project coming next week!

I hope you get to quilt today!

Minnesota Quilter's Show 2016

I went to sneak preview yesterday at the Minnesota Quilter's Show in St. Cloud.  It was an absolute blast and we had a great time!  There were a ton of gorgeous quilts that I will be posting pictures of for the next week or two over on my Machine Applique Adventures Facebook group.

I was excited to see how my two new show quilts did and I was quite pleased with the results.  Kaboom! took second place behind Margaret Solomon Gunn.

All Fired Up (made with some of my lovely Island Batiks as part of the Island Batik Ambassadors) took second place behind Sharon Schlotzhauer.

Here's my mom with her two quilts in the show!  Come check out some others in my Facebook group.

AND today was the last day of school.

AND I got the proofs for my book today!

It's been a crazy, but good week.

Kaboom! Takes Third

My new show quilt, Kaboom!, is at Home Machine Quilter's Showcase this weekend.  This is it's inaugural show.  It's in the Conventional Machine category and took a third place ribbon!  I'm tickled pink.  I wish I'd taken more pictures to share here with you, but here are a few.  I'll share more once it comes back.

I had this gorgeous orange batik (it's in the biggest spikes below) that I loved and wanted to showcase in a quilt.  I'd been wanting to make a mariners compass, but didn't want to use the traditional setting so I designed the center of the quilt.  Then, I played in Electric Quilter until I came up with a border design that I liked to go with it (all the spikes).  I've been working on this quilt for almost four years and I remember doing this while my younger son was napping!

Some lovely texture as I quilted.

I love feathers.  I just can't get enough of them.

The gorgeous Mariner's compass center.  I love the way it sparkles.  The blue quilting thread looks simply electric!

The full quilt. I designed the borders knowing I wanted to do a curvy binding.  I'm very happy with the way it turned out!  And with it's first win!  So exciting! (Okay, I think I used up all my exclamation points for the week....)

Come check out my Machine Applique Adventures Facebook Group! (Yes, I had one more in me...)

Happy Almost Weekend!
