When I found out our December Island Batik Ambassador challenge was to make a scrappy table topper I decided to challenge myself to use some of the 5 inch square packs I have from Island Batik Fabrics. One day in August (yes, really, I was motivated that day even though the quilt wasn't due until December), I decided I wanted to play around with a traditional Delectable Mountains pattern.
I started by making two 4 1/2 inch half square triangle units in opposite directions. I then cut them in thirds and swapped some of the sections around until I came up with the design below. Similar, but different.
I then started adding in the creams. The creams were also originally 5 inch Island Batik squares.
I decided I didn't want to have to worry about cutting off triangle tips with the binding, so I added a narrow strip all the way around the edge to prevent that problem.
Then I had fun on my friend Karen's Bernina Q20. I love feathers. You can never quilt enough of them! I did the quilting in December and was glad the top was done. Life gets busy and it was a good thing I only had quilting and binding to accomplish!
The final quilt! I love how cheerful these warm colors are.
I hope you get to quilt today!
