Witchy Stitchy Blog Hop

I LOVE Halloween quilts!  I think it's because of the colors.  Orange, lime green, black, purple.  Such fun.  When Just Let Me Quilt announced this blog hop I knew just what I wanted to do.  I saw a pumpkin at MQX carved with a quilt block design a while ago.  And the idea was born...

Of course I used my favorite Island Batik fabrics to do my wallhanging.

I wanted blocks that were fairly simple and easy to identify by quilters.  I pieced the blocks and then fused down all the pieces.

For the background I used Lori Kennedy's bat design.  It seemed perfect for this Halloween quilt.

Inside each black quilt block I did some fun filler pattern to flatten the black areas.

All done and sew much fun!

Free Motion Friday - A Three Motif Challenge from Lori Kennedy

Yesterday Lori Kennedy of the Inbox Jaunt issued a doodling challenge.  She suggested you combine three motifs and some background fills to complete a design.

I picked her Honeycomb Leaf, Fantasy Flower and my own Websterclams.  I decided to start with a frame of Websterclams.

Then I added a fantasy flower in the center.

I decided it needed an outline.

Then I added four Honeycomb Leaves.

They too needed an outline.

And some partial Fantasy Flowers.  I love it at this point.

I did an echo inside the clams.

Then doubled that echo....not my favorite, but you can't erase sharpie and it's just a doodle.

Now for a background.  Wavy lines.  Ick.  They get lost.

Make the waves look more like cross hatching by going in both directions?  Ick too.

Straight lines?  Better.  You can see the motifs more.

Bubbles.  They're okay.  But they'd be better at a smaller scale I think.

Lots of echoing in the last corner?  Eh.  It's okay, but not great.  It goes to show that the background fill can really make or break motifs!

Free Motion Friday - Two New Books to Play With!

So my friend Lori Kennedy lives not too far from me (in the same metro area) and though we've never managed to meet up (we really need to do that sometime!), we've had quite a few conversations about Free Motion Quilting and other things quilt related.  I was excited when her first and her new Free Motion Machine Quilting 1-2-3 books arrived at my door!  And there was a present....a small spider web and spider :)

I've been reading Lori's blog, the Inbox Jaunt, for a long time, and I can't wait to try something from these books!  That will probably happen within the next 48 hours because who can resist?  I'll be sure to share about it.

Seriously....how cute is this spider!

It was a busy day and I haven't had a chance to look through everything yet, but look at this sweet dedication from Lori...

I can't wait to read them over breakfast tomorrow (or as you're reading this lol).

Free Motion Friday - Doodle Time!

Yesterday Lori Kennedy of the Inbox Jaunt posted about doodling and stitching Christmas trees.  I saw hers and had to do one.  And of course it had to have feathers!  I then gave myself permission to stitch the whole fat quarter with whatever came to my brain at the time.  It was so relaxing!

I did some random waves.

And some funky feathers.

And some ribbon/bubble work.

And a plant like looking thing.

And a spiral flowery thing.

And then I remembered a video Christa Watson did on her Wavy Plaid pattern so I had to try that too!
Such fun.
