Free Motion Friday - Quilting the Border Part 2

As I was quilting all the different patterns in the border of my Brick Wall Free Motion Quilt Along I got to the braid pattern.  It worked really really well in the border.   I was having such fun with it that I didn't want to stop...

Here's how I turned the first corner with the braid.

Then I realized instead of backtracking I could do something fun.  Like triangles!  It looks like teeth...

I had fun going around the corner with teeth too...

Or half circles!

Then I tried rectangles. Not my favorite, but it works okay.

Be sure to come back next week to see the reveal of the finished quilt!  I'm sooooo excited!  And don't worry, there are more quilt motifs in the works for Free Motion Fridays! Yes, I have a serious addiction to exclamation marks.

I hope you get to quilt today!

Quilting my English Paper Piecing by Machine

A while ago I showed you the process of creating this English Paper Pieced quilt.  I started making the Ballet quilt by Willyne Hammerstein from Millefiori Quilts 2.  I had some leftover pieces and decided to make this top.  I love it!  Here's the whole top.

It was the first time I used rulers to create my straight lines (the ring around the outside.  It worked beautifully.  Though I must admit that I did NOT bust out my new ruler foot (I need to find it), so I used my regular free motion foot (Bernina 23) and my trust Add a Quarter ruler for paper piecing.  It worked like a charm and I will definitely do it again.  Though I really do need to find my new foot.  It's in a bag.  Somewhere.  With other quilting stuff in it.  I forsee a weekend task...

Here's the center.  I quilted around motifs and did simple things since there are so many seams and layers in certain places.

And the quilting form the back.

Inspired by My Son

I was fiddling around on EQ7, my favorite design software last night and my 5 year old asked if he could play too.  He had a blast rearranging the blocks, turning them, and changing their colors.  It's fun to watch him create!

I also saw a basked with this pattern on it the other day.  Isn't it fabulous!  It would make a great frame around applique blocks....hmmm.

Machine Quilting Unlimited's 10th Birthday Quilt

I was looking back through some blog posts and I realized that I'd never shared this quilt.

I made it for Machine Quilting Unlimited's tenth anniversary contest.  The contest requirements were that the quilt was 10 inches square and used 10 in some way.  I decided what better than 10 birthday balloons!

I picked out 10 of my designs from the Brick Wall Quilt Along (see link at the top of the blog for all of them) and went to town creating a rainbow of color.  It was so much fun, but so teeny tiny.  It was quite the challenge, but in a good way.

Here's a closer look:

Free Motion Friday - Quilting the Border

I decided to quilt the border of my Brick Wall quilt with bits of each of the patterns I used.  Here are the pictures.  Bubble Stacks are a part of this border segment.

Flaming Circles are shown below and Double Triangles.

Pills are shown below and Lacy Clamshells

This section has a Funky Feather, Echoed Tears and Curly Hearts.

Triple Circles are shown here.

This piece has Echoed Tears and Blobs.

On the right side here is Eyeballs.

I hope you get to quilt today!  More from the border next week.

Finishing the Project from Sarah Ann Smith's Class

If you missed last Saturday's post you didn't see the start of this quilt.  It was during a fabulous class in Houston from Sarah Ann Smith.  Here's where I left off...

After having sat for a while I pulled the lint off the black fabric with my trusty lint roller I happen to keep right next to my machine.  I use it a lot when I'm quilting a dark colored fabric.

Next to quilt those circles.  I decided to make a circle chain quilting them in a light teal to match the outermost circles.  I love the effect, but then I got scared again and it sat for a few more weeks.

Here's the finished quilt.  I decided to echo all the painting and then fill the background with some wild quilting combining three different patterns.

Here's a close-up.  I used bubbles, paisleys, and some fern looking fillers to fill the background area.  The thread is dark blue because it's really hard on my eyeballs to use black thread on a black background.

Another view of the background quilting.

And here's what happened in the center.  I used bubbles since the space was so narrow.

And the BACK side of the quilt.  I think I like it almost as much as the front!

A wonderful quilt from a wonderful class.
