All About Strings Blog Hop!

Today is my turn for the All About Strings Blog Hop!  I must admit that I have never made a string quilt before, so I decided to hop on board.

The first thing I wondered was whether or not you had to piece your strings on paper.  I opted to use a stabilizer instead.  It went okay, but was kind of thick later on. I'm not sure I'll do it again.  I love these fabrics from Island Batik!

I decided to stitch a feather flower in the squares and then diagonal lines in the background. This picture is true to life scale.  The squares are just a little under two inches.

Here it is all done on the fresh snow that fell while I was creating it!

Be sure to check out all the other amazing quilters on the hop!

I hope you get to quilt today!

  3. WoW Suzy, I love this design. I might recommend a lightweight tearaway stabilizer and I mean the cheap kind... for me that works best, although I have been known to also use a water soluble stabilizer, thus it washes out when you do tie first washing of the quilt project. Other backings tho.. my favorite is paper used in doctors offices, it's like newspaper print, but lighter... but newspaper print also works well. Newspapers will usually sell there end rolls for pretty cheap. Either or, I love your project, very nicely done.

  5. Beautiful quilt! I like the negative space--makes the rest pop. I didn't use anything behind my strings when I stitched them--I was probably supposed to, but I didn't, and it worked out just fine. I guess everyone has a preferred method. Thanks for sharing!

  11. That's beautiful. I love phone book pages for piecing. Someone shared a great secret with me...just stitch thru the paper one time then as you add your strings fold the paper out of the way. Only 1 seam to rip paper from then. It works like a charm.
