Free Motion Friday - Black and White Flowers - The Quilting!

For Free Motion Friday today I have a quilt I quilted with one of the new patterns I stitched during the Brick Wall Quilt Along.

I used the pattern Curl Echoes.  It's one of my favorites and was great to really sink the back of my Black and White Flowers quilt.

I must admit that I bought 3 different border fabrics for this quilt.  Did I use any of them?  Nope.  They didn't work!  They were too busy and distracted from the center of the quilt.  So, I decided to leave if off.

Her is the finished quilt.  I really meant to take a closeup, but I forgot.  And of course, where is the quilt?  It's having it's sleeve put on a by a friend of mine.  Oops.  I thought for sure I had some closeups.  I'll post more pictures of it close-up next Friday as well as a new pattern.

Gotta love the cute photo bomber!

Here's a peek at my new quilt for the Island Batik Ambassadors New Beginnings Blog Hop which starts today!  My post will go up Wednesday.

I hope you get to quilt today!

Putting together the Black and White Flowers

I decided to cut my Black and White flowers into hexagons and put them together with triangles.  Some lovely friends helped me decide that the majority of the triangle should be black dominant fabrics.

A first try at laying out the black triangles.

Rearranged for better balance.

The sewing is started!  I can't wait to get it all together.

Black and White Flower #18 - the last one!

I can hardly believe this is my last Black and White Flower to share!  I had some trouble with this one.

Here are the fabrics I picked out at first.  I decided the orange background with the tear drops really didn't work.  It doesn't have enough contrast with the darkest orange.

So I tried this light yellow instead.  I had fun fussy cutting it.

Once I put the flower on the teal background I realized that the white was a bit transparent.  So I added an extra layer of white fabric and fusible.  You can see how I did it below.  I cut a piece about 1/16 inch smaller than the original.

Hereis the first layer all stitched up.

And the back.

Layer Two.

Now to put the quilt together!

I hope you get to quilt today and for those of you who celebrate the holiday, Merry Christmas Eve!

Black and White Flower #17

I'm getting close to being done!  This flower and one more!  And only one more day of school before winter break!

Each of the petals on this flower was cut from the same multi color batik.  It's fun to see how the different petals turned out.

Here's the back.  In order to stitch the petals in succession I would stitching a straight line to where I wanted to start the blanket stitch up again.  Then stitch over that with blanket stitch covering it up.

And the final block.

And the back.  There were a few black thread bobbles.

Black and White Flower #16

I made it through my work day.  My boss was kind enough to let me go early since my prep time is at the end of the day.  We're due 10-12 inches of snow here followed by a frigid night of -20 tomorrow evening.  We're all stocked up and not planning on leaving the house until Monday!  And I have lots of sewing to do!

Without further ado, here's Black and White Flower #16.  This is one of my favorites because of the five red leaves that stick out the top.  I had a blast fussy cutting some fan fabric to fit in those leaves.  Such fun!

The back of layer one.

Layer two and all done!

The back of the final block.

I hope you get to quilt today and if you're in the frozen north like me I hope you stay warm!

Black and White Flower #15

Black and White Flower #15 is one of my favorites.    It was really fun to fussy cut the petals for this block!

Here's layer one.  A lonely pink petal.

And the back.

And some purple petals came along to keep the pink petal company!

The back.  You can see that the purple blanket stitching is smaller than the pink.  I have been using longer stitches on more solid fabrics to add depth to my work.

And the first black and white appears!  Aren't the fussy cuts great?

The back.

All done!  So much fun.

Black and White Flower #13

It's time for lucky Black and White Flower #13!  I love this one.  It started with the fun orange batik you see below.  It has these great purple swirls in it.  If you've been reading my blog for awhile you know that I LOVE orange.  And batiks with orange and another color are totally irresistible for me.

Here you can see layer one.

And the back.

With the purple for layer two added.  I love how it makes the purple swirls sparkle.

And the back.

All done!  I LOVE how I fussy cut this white print.  Fussy cutting is so much fun!

I hope you get to quilt today!

Black and White Flower #12

It's time to get back to the Black and White Flowers series.  I had so much fun making all of these!  For this particular flower I used a big white "coloring" fabric for the background.  Here you can see the started block.  I was so excited I forgot to take pictures at the very beginning!

Here's the back of the of the first layer.

And the block all done.  I love the way the orange/coral/pinks play together.

And the back all done.

I hope you get to quilt today!
