Free Motion Friday - Quilting Vintage Part 1

My grandmother and my cousin went to Hungary, where my grandmother was born, after we graduated from college (we were born 12 days apart).  She brought me back a gorgeous dresser scarf of traditional Hungarian Embroidery.  I love it and knew I wanted to quilt it.

I purchased a piece of light blue satin at my local Joann's for the background.  I love the way it shows through the holes in the embroidery.

I started off with the outlined shape you see below.  I then used a grid stencil and purple air erase marker to mark a grid.  I used air erase because I didn't know if the embroidery threads would bleed if the dresser scarf got wet.

Now it was time to figure out what shape I wanted to use on the grid.  I use a piece of thin plastic and a sharpie to try design possibilities.

Here are two ideas I came up with.  I decided that I liked the one with the pebbles the best.

I traced the outlines of the design onto the fabric and was ready to stitch.

Here it is all stitched out.  There are still purple marks as they haven't all erased yet so it's hard to see.

It's much easier to see on the back.  So lovely!

Be sure to come back for the next few weeks to see all the steps to creating this piece!

I hope you get to quilt today!

Free Motion Friday - Making Connections, A Free Motion Quilting Workbook Blog Hop and GIVEAWAY!

I adore free motion quilting.  It's relaxing to me.   I know other's think I am crazy, but I love to see the motifs puff as I quilt along.

So when Dorie Hruska was looking for bloggers to help promote her new book Making Connections, A Free Motion Quilting Workbook I jumped at the chance.  I love to learn all things free motion after all and I'm fairly new to grid work quilting.

BE SURE TO LEAVE A COMMENT FOR A CHANCE TO WIN A COPY OF YOUR OWN!

I quilt on a domestic machine and she is a long arm quilter, but her book can easily be applied to both methods of quilting.  It's also great for beginners because it clearly explains how to make the designs continuous.  The book is very organized and the drawings are clear and even though I've been quilting for 30 years I learned some new things from Dorie's tips.

With all that pretty eye candy to look at the first thing I had to do was pick up my own pen and paper and doodle some...

And then I had to quilt it!

I started with some gorgeous Island Batik fabrics and then added some lines to make the grid.

Then I started in the center.

And kept adding to it...

Here's the final center.

Then I started on the squares.  Round one done.

And round two done.

Now for the outside.  Round one done.

And all done!

The back looks great too!

And here's the final front.  I think I'll make it into a pillow.
